What We Offer

The aim of these session is to provide safe and enjoyable football for people aged 40+ in local community. Walking Football is a slower version of the beautiful game, which is a minimal contact sport with one main difference to standard football – no running! It is a great way to keep fit, learn new skills, have fun and socialise all at the same time.

To achieve this we currently provide weekly activities to the community and those who want to play can do so in our very own team.

To get involved in these sessions contact our specialist project manager. Or you can fill out our registration form to book onto the session.

Weekly sessions

We currently work with Bridging the Gap project and Beats to deliver a walking football session at Castle Leisure Centre, Tuesdays 11.15am-12pm. The sessions only coat £3.50 per session or free for gym members.

These sessions are heavily game focused and are based around having fun and playing recreational football. They give everyone who attends the opportunity to participate in a fun sport that can be enjoyed by all.

Walking football offers a multitude of health benefits to older people such as reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke while improving blood pressure. Positive changes in postural balance, blood pressure and resting heart rate, lowered cholesterol, improved blood sugar levels, bone density and improving reactions, whilst slashing the odds of suffering from type 2 diabetes – all indicators of general good health. Walking football is an excellent way of staying fit and healthy.

Bury Relics – The WF Team

Off the back of the weekly session that are run this year saw our first ever competitive walking football team form and enter the local Greater Manchester league as Bury Relics. This league consists of over 60’s walking football teams from around Greater Manchester that play once a month at Heywood Sports Village.

As this was the Relics’ first year as a formed and competitive team we  are overwhelmed with the results. After numerous games each month the final games came down to goal difference to decided who topped the league and got promotion. After a nervous wait it was announced that Bury Relics came runners up! This was a huge achievement after the team was so new and over the weeks had lost a few of the original players to injury and illness. We are immensely proud of all the players in the Relics team but also all the support they receive from other participants at our Tuesday sessions.

A special thanks goes to Keiran Tilley, who organisation and passion to get a team together and enter the league was outstanding, so much so he has now gained enough players to enter two teams into the next league.
